Football (soccer) is the most popular sport worldwide with around 265 million players, and the number of female players is growing rapidly. For example, more than three million young people play football in the United States alone, and almost half of them are female; and in 2006 around 83 000 female football players from the age of 12 years were registered in Sweden (population around 9 million).
